In particular, we would like all pupils to enjoy learning a second language and understanding the culture and country it originates. At Butleigh C of E School, KS2 study French and learn about France. Learning French is through stories, songs, watching videos, looking at pictures and listening to sound files in French. Most French is listening and speaking but some written French is recorded in French Books. Any opportunities for outside visitors to speak French to pupils is encouraged.

In KS2, French is taught discretely by the class teacher. We also try to integrate French throughout the day e.g. using classroom instructions/ commands, as appropriate. We have French books where children can make note of vocabulary and write simple sentences. Planning |

Children enjoy French and most children are able to communicate in a simple way confidently by the end of KS2. Children relish telling others about their visits to other countries and their success in communicating with people whose first language is not English.
